Jebel Shams

Jebel Shams, often referred to as the "Mountain of the Sun," is the highest peak in Oman, standing at an impressive 3,009 meters (9,872 feet) above sea level. Located in the Western Hajar Mountain range in northern Oman, it offers breathtaking views and a rugged, dramatic landscape, making it a popular camping location. The mountain is particularly famous for its deep canyons, especially the stunning Wadi Ghul, which is sometimes called the "Grand Canyon of Oman" due to its striking similarities to the Grand Canyon in the United States. Visitors to Jebel Shams are drawn to its vast natural beauty, clear skies, and the unique flora and fauna that thrive in the harsh mountain environment.

In addition to its scenic beauty, Jebel Shams is a popular destination for camping, hiking and adventure enthusiasts. The mountain features several trekking routes, including the popular balcony walk hike, which stunning panoramic views of the wadi Ghul. The area's cooler temperatures, especially in the summer, make it an appealing escape from the hot Omani lowlands. Jebel Shams is also home to ancient villages, terraced farms, and historical sites, making it an excellent place for those interested in experiencing both nature and Oman's cultural heritage.

How to get there?

Although you will see many people drive up to Jebel Shams in a sedan, we highly recommend using a 4x4 as the roads are steep and there’s a good amount of off roading to get to the mountains.

Where to camp?

You can camp anywhere in Jebel Shams. The mountain is vast and there are plenty of spots for you to pitch your tent. We recommend staying clear of cliff edges and vehicle paths, and all you need to do is find a spot with a good view and set up camp.

What’s nearby?
There are two hotels, Sama Heights Resort & Jebel Shams Resort where you can go for meals, or prepare your own like a true adventurer.

You can grab coffee, a croissant or some delectable desert at the quaint Cliff Cafe, or buy some basic food items at a nearby store.
However, if you want a more elaborate meal, you will need to head down to Al Hamra.
There is also a small local grocery store where you can purchase basic items such as water, milk, firewood, chips, soft drinks etc.

If you’re headed to Jebel Shams make sure to spend atleast one night camping surrounded by these stunning mountains.
